Crankshaft/camshaft position correlation bank 1 sensor A

What it means

The camshaft A signal on bank 1 is out of step with the crankshaft signal, so valve timing may be wrong. If there is rattling from the timing chain, stop driving: a jumped or broken chain can wreck the engine.

Symptoms

  • engine warning light
  • rattling from the timing chain at start-up
  • rough running, reduced power or hard starting
  • in severe cases the engine will not start

Likely causes, most likely first

Likely causes, most likely first
No.Cause
01stretched timing chain or worn tensioner/guides
02timing belt or chain jumped a tooth or fitted incorrectly
03camshaft adjuster (phaser) stuck or worn
04faulty camshaft or crankshaft position sensor
05damaged sensor trigger wheel
06low oil level or wrong oil affecting the adjusters

What to check, step by step

  1. 01Check the oil level and grade
  2. 02Read the cam/crank deviation (phase angle) values in live data and compare with the maker's limits
  3. 03Listen for chain rattle at cold start
  4. 04Check the camshaft and crankshaft sensors and their wiring
  5. 05Check the mechanical timing marks and chain stretch; replace the timing chain kit if out of limits
