Crankshaft/camshaft position correlation bank 2 sensor B
What it means
The camshaft B signal on bank 2 is out of step with the crankshaft signal, so valve timing may be wrong. If there is rattling from the timing chain, stop driving: a jumped or broken chain can wreck the engine. Bank 2 only exists on V and flat engines: it is the side without cylinder 1.
Symptoms
- engine warning light
- rattling from the timing chain at start-up
- rough running, reduced power or hard starting
- in severe cases the engine will not start
Likely causes, most likely first
| No. | Cause |
|---|---|
| 01 | stretched timing chain or worn tensioner/guides |
| 02 | timing belt or chain jumped a tooth or fitted incorrectly |
| 03 | camshaft adjuster (phaser) stuck or worn |
| 04 | faulty camshaft or crankshaft position sensor |
| 05 | damaged sensor trigger wheel |
| 06 | low oil level or wrong oil affecting the adjusters |
What to check, step by step
- 01Check the oil level and grade
- 02Read the cam/crank deviation (phase angle) values in live data and compare with the maker's limits
- 03Listen for chain rattle at cold start
- 04Check the camshaft and crankshaft sensors and their wiring
- 05Check the mechanical timing marks and chain stretch; replace the timing chain kit if out of limits
