Lost communication with instrument cluster
What it means
Another module has stopped receiving messages from the instrument cluster (dashboard).
Symptoms
- Gauges, dash display or warning lights not working
- Car may not start if the immobiliser is in the cluster
- Other modules set warnings because the dash data is missing
Likely causes, most likely first
| No. | Cause |
|---|---|
| 01 | weak 12V battery |
| 02 | blown instrument cluster fuse |
| 03 | loose connector behind the cluster (often after dashboard work) |
| 04 | failed cluster (cracked solder joints, failed display or power supply) |
| 05 | CAN wiring fault |
What to check, step by step
- 01Check 12V battery and the cluster fuse
- 02Check whether the cluster answers a scan tool
- 03Check the cluster connector and any recently disturbed dashboard wiring
- 04Test power, ground and CAN at the cluster connector
- 05If replacing the cluster, mileage and immobiliser data must be transferred legally by a specialist
